The Portuguese capital is the destination that offers the best value for money in the world and the most friendly European city for tourists, according to users of TripAdvisor. For hospitality, Lisbon scores 8.32 out of ten possible points and comes third in the rankings. The survey also finds that taxi drivers in Lisbon are among the most friendly in the world, placed 8th in the rankings. The Portuguese capital is also among the top 20 cities for ease of internal mobility, quality of public transport and retail offer. The survey was conducted in November 2012, with 75 thousand users of TripAdvisor who had recently written comments on the selected cities. The choice is based on the key cities of the countries that received the most international visitors, according to the World Tourism Organization.
In addition, Lisbon is ranked 44th best city in the world to live in, according to a survey carried out by Mercer consultants. The “Quality of Life Study” examined the quality of living in 221 cities – with New York in the United States, as a benchmark – and concluded, for the second consecutive year that Vienna (Austria) is the city with the best quality of life. Lisbon was the only Portuguese city to be analysed, ranking 44th in a survey led by Vienna, with Zurich (2nd), Geneva (8th) and Bern (10th) in Switzerland; Munich (4th), Dusseldorf (6th) and Frankfurt (7th) in Germany, and Copenhagen (9th) in Denmark. The living conditions in cities are reviewed annually, taking into account 39 criteria, grouped into ten categories, including social, economic and political factors as well as medical health, schools, education, public services and transport, entertainment, consumer goods, housing and climate.
