Since the beginning of the year, tourists staying overnight in Berlin are now required to pay the new Berlin ‘City Tax’, effectively an accommodation tax.
Applicable from 1st January 2014 to all private overnight stays the tax is equivalent to 5% of the room rate and is automatically added to the room bill. Tourists in business travel to Berlin, however, are not obligated to pay the tax if they are able to verify the business nature of their travel.
