The vineyards around the city were founded by the Emperor Charles IV in the 14th century. The vineyards gave the name to the luxury municipal district Vinohrady (the Czech expression for “vineyards”), formerly also called Královské Vinohrady (Royal Vineyards). The most famous Prague vineyards are St. Clara’s Vineyard in Troja, Grebovka in Vinohrady and St. Wenceslas Vineyard in the Prague Castle.
